Champions Season - NYCFC

How did they do?

Following NYCFC’s impressive run to becoming 2021 MLS Cup Champions for the first time in Club history last year, the hunt for more silverware started just a few months later in the Concacaf Champions League. However, despite a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the semi-finals in early April, NYCFC lost 4-2 overall to eventual champions, the Seattle Sounders. NYCFC also reached the latter stages of the US Open Cup at the end of June but were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Despite these disappointments, the Club turned it around and claimed its first silverware of the season in mid-September courtesy of Alexander Callens and Maxi Moralez who both scored four minutes into each half of the Campeones Cup final for a 2-0 victory against reigning Liga MX champions Atlas FC. NYCFC also achieved a guaranteed post-season appearance for the seventh consecutive with a top-four finish in the MLS Eastern Conference. They’ll be hoping to use the momentum gained from their Campeones Cup victory to spur them on in the MLS Cup Playoffs and become the first back-to-back MLS Cup Champions in ten years.
