Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring, non-essential amino acid that, when supplemented appropriately, increases skeletal muscle carnosine concentrations. This effect is particularly beneficial for athletes engaged in high-intensity activities, such as those requiring sustained efforts of approximately 1 to 10 minutes, or sports characterised by repeated bouts of high-intensity efforts, such as intermittent-based exercise.  

Fatigue during these short, intense efforts is multifactorial, with substantial evidence supporting the role of skeletal muscle acidosis, resulting from the accumulation of hydrogen ions (H+), as a primary factor limiting performance. In response to this challenge, skeletal muscle employs several intracellular and extracellular buffering mechanisms to mitigate exercise-induced acidosis. Carnosine, a key intracellular buffer, plays a critical role in this process due to its nitrogen-containing imidazole side chain, which binds to H+ and slows the decline in muscle pH during high-intensity exercise.

An increase in carnosine concentration has been associated with improvements in performance across various athletic contexts. For example, research has demonstrated enhanced sprint and intermittent-running performance in soccer players following chronic beta-alanine supplementation within the recommended dosage range. Additionally, peak and mean power output during sprinting at the end of a prolonged simulated cycling race was significantly improved in individuals who supplemented with beta-alanine.
