Having won a total of 64 Olympic medals including 31 golds since sailing was introduced at the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896, the British Sailing Team can without argument be considered the most successful national Olympic sailing team of all time. As well as Olympic competition where the team competes in all ten classes, the team regularly represents Great Britain in numerous classes at regattas all over the world. PAST AND PRESENT SAILORS Sir Ben Ainslie is probably the most familiar name in British Sailing since no sailor has won more Olympic medals (four golds and one silver). Hannah Mills is undoubtedly the most successful female Olympic sailor (two golds and one silver) having defended her Rio 2016 gold medal alongside Eilidh McIntyre in the women’s 470 in Tokyo in 2020. Back in 2012, Helena Lucas became the first British athlete to win Paralympic sailing gold. A host of big names have recently retired from Olympic competition including Giles Scott, Stuart Bithell, Luke Patience, Ali Young, Charlotte Dobson, Chris Grube, and Ben Saxton. However, the team looks in good shape for Paris 2024 with experienced veterans and a host of new talent including Eilidh McIntyre, Dylan Fletcher, Nick Dempsey, John Gimson, Anna Burnet, Emma Wilson, Tom Squires, and Saskia Tidey.
