September Club of the Month – Wolfpack Running Club

Club Facts:
Based: Campbell, CA
Members: 100+
Founded: 1997

Wolfpack Running Club is a Bay Area running club for all levels of runners – from newbies to elites! We compete in road races, cross country, trail running, and track & field events. We’ve had members who have competed internationally and even in the US Olympic Trials. A majority of the team competes in our regional USATF sanctioned Grand Prix Road and Cross-Country series of races. The club has grown from 6 members to 100+ over the past 20 years!

The distance-oriented team began after a group of West Valley College female alumni wanted to form a training group that would compete in a series of XC races against other running clubs. They gathered some of their friends and the first “Wolfpack International” team was formed with the legendary Coach Bill Campbell at the helm. Initially, the only men on the team were sprinters, but in 1999 XC runners joined the ranks and the ‘pack went to work. After a few years of rallying members to make complete teams for the Pacific Association team scored races, the club slowly began to fizzle around 2006 due to many life changes for some key members.

In 2008, Coach Lisa Renteria took over the semi-defunct team and recruited some friends and a handful of local college grads with the goal to recharge and revamp the direction of the club. Over the next 10 years, Wolfpack has grown to over 100 members and has found support from many local and national companies – including Science in Sport! Wolfpack is a club for anyone interested in running, whether it’s to start training for your first marathon, get back into it with a team as a post-collegiate competitive runner, or regain your love for running. The only qualification is that you want to run… and have fun!

2018 Goals: Support every member in their individual running pursuits, support the local running community through volunteering and education, and for the team to always have fun and enjoy growth in running.

Achievements & Wins: Many members from the Wolfpack have claimed great achievements throughout the years. Here are some honorable mentions:
• Men’s team 3rd or 4th place in PA USATF Road Grand Prix since 2015
• Women’s team 2nd place in PA USATF Road Grand Prix since 2015

Meet the Members:
“I love the isotonic energy gels. The boost of energy hits subtly but effectively in the middle of my long runs, and there is absolutely no stomach discomfort – even with taking the gel only 15min before starting the run! And the Strawberry REGO recovery mix totally helps me recover by the next day, so I can hit up two workouts back to back at my full effort level. – Andy Crawford

“The bars are a great recovery snack after a long run or workout” – Julie Woodruff

“I really enjoyed the fluidity, the taste and the boost that the isotonic energy gels provided for me during my race – I even had a huge PR at this race. Absolutely no stomach discomfort during or after the race either.” – Eric Sullivan

“My favorite are the Berry GO isotonic energy gel with 75mg of caffeine!” – Lisa Renteria

“I tried out the chocolate flavor isotonic gel for today’s turnover workout. Not only was I impressed by the light chocolate non-sweet flavor, I did not experience tummy issues taking this right before getting started It got me through the workout feeling strong. The gels are my new go-to for long runs and races. They provide an easy, non-sticky, and beneficial energy source before or during my runs.” – Mona Leon

Favorite Route: Los Gatos Creek Trail & Lexington Reservoir Loop – Offering a nearby paved, flat, and traffic free location perfect for easy runs, tempo runs, and continuous long runs. A short gravel section leads into a rolling hills loop ~8mi around Lexington Reservoir in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Favorite Place for food/drinks: Strike Brewing Co.

Club meets/runs: Weekly Tuesday evening track workouts at Los Gatos High School track, and periodic weekend long runs at various locations. To find out more about the club, their weekly meets, and annual runs, check out their website:
