Replenish, Retain, Rehydrate

Dehydration during exercise occurs when fluid loss from sweating, respiration, and metabolic processes exceeds fluid intake. Research indicates that dehydration exceeding 3% of body mass impairs physical performance, particularly in warm or hot environments. This decline in performance results from a combination of physiological (e.g., increased thermoregulatory and cardiovascular strain, reduced muscle and cerebral blood flow, and greater reliance on muscle glycogen, leading to faster glycogen depletion rates) and perceptual (e.g., heightened thirst, increased perceived effort, mood disturbances, and altered pain perception) mechanisms. To mitigate these effects, maintaining  adequate fluid intake is essential, especially during prolonged or high-temperature exercise. Additionally, consuming electrolytes, particularly sodium, helps replace sweat losses, maintain sodium balance, stimulate thirst, and support rehydration. Drinks containing ≥30 mmol/L of sodium have also been found to enhance post-exercise rehydration by reducing urine output and improving water retention.

FOCUS AND ALERTNESS

Caffeine is a proven cognitive enhancer, shown to improve focus and reduce perception of effort. Consuming caffeine is shown to enhance several aspects of physical performance, including time to exhaustion, explosive power and repeated sprint performance.

Adding caffeine to a fuelling strategy during the later stages of exercise will reduce the effects of fatigue and help keep your mind sharp to make decisions.
