ENERGY FAQs

Why should I take energy supplements?

Sometimes, your diet might not be enough, especially when it comes to endurance events. Energy supplements are a great addition to your fueling plans that enhance physical and mental performance, and help you avoid the dreading 'bonk' during long events. Energy supplements can support you when you need to fight fatigue, get an energy boost, and some contain essential vitamins or key electrolytes that replenish those lost during sweat.

What are the best energy supplements?

Energy supplements should provide a quick source of carbohydrates alongside longer-lasting energy to support training and performance. At Science in Sport, every product is developed using evidence-based science to deliver exactly this.

Similar to when you should be taking products, what products also depend on individuality and the workout type.

Carbs play an important role in all aspects of your session, pre- and post-workout, but how many you need depends on the intensity. More intense = more carbs needed per hour. Aim to ingest between 60-90g of carbs per hour at a minimum.

A big factor in an athlete's overall performance is their mental state; caffeine can be a great addition to your workout to stop mental fuzziness from seeping in. However, not everyone will need it!

BETA Fuel Gels and Drinks are best for longer endurance sessions, such as marathons, half marathons, or long-distance cycling or swims, as they contain a dual-source of carbohydrates. The GO range is best for shorter, more intense sessions, but there is some crossover!

When's the best time to take energy supplements?

It depends on the amount you’re ingesting, what type of exercise you’re performing, and your unique needs! Whether it’s a shorter, more intense session or a longer endurance-based event, the timing will vary. For high-intensity sessions, take your supplement(s) right before you start. For workouts of 2 hours or more, fuel consistently throughout.
Mix up your product choice to keep it interesting, especially for longer events; we have a wide array of flavours and product types to keep you energized and satisfied.
