WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

Dietary nitrate supplementation has been demonstrated to elevate plasma nitrate and nitrite concentrations, as well as skeletal muscle nitrate concentrations, in a dose-dependent manner. While nitrate and nitrite are endogenously produced as byproducts of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-mediated nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, exogenous sources, primarily dietary intake, can augment the body’s nitrate and nitrite reservoirs. This exogenous supplementation can facilitate NO production under conditions where NOS activity is compromised or when tissue oxygen availability is restricted. Following dietary nitrate ingestion, plasma nitrate concentrations peak within 1–2 hours, while plasma nitrite levels reach their maximum within 2–3 hours, with both returning to baseline approximately 24 hours post-ingestion.

Acute or daily nitrate supplementation at doses exceeding 370 mg (>6 mmol) has been reported to reduce oxygen consumption at a fixed submaximal power output by approximately 3–5%, suggesting an improvement in skeletal muscle efficiency. Consistent with this, multiple studies have shown that dietary nitrate supplementation can enhance endurance exercise performance under certain conditions.

Furthermore, emerging research indicates that nitrate supplementation may be advantageous in high-power and sprint-based sports. The nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway is particularly effective under hypoxic and acidic conditions, which are characteristic of high-intensity exercise reliant on anaerobic glycolysis. The low oxygen availability around type II (fast-twitch) muscle fibres may enhance the reduction of nitrite to NO, thereby improving muscle contractile function and local blood flow. Athletes participating in sprinting, track cycling, speed skating, and team sports such as basketball, soccer, and rugby, which require a high proportion of type II fibre recruitment, may particularly benefit from nitrate supplementation.

Recent studies suggest that nitrate may enhance skeletal muscle contractility, power output, and performance in both single and repeated sprint efforts. These findings align with evidence indicating that nitrate supplementation can enhance force production during the early phase of muscle contraction and improve muscle speed and power during maximal exertion. Such effects could be particularly advantageous in high-intensity sports where rapid acceleration is critical, potentially allowing athletes to reach peak velocity more efficiently and enhance overall performance, even at elite levels. The underlying mechanisms may involve nitrate-mediated modulation of muscle calcium handling and sensitivity, which play a crucial role in excitation-contraction coupling.

Given the importance of optimising exercise performance, targeted nitrate supplementation strategies, such as those provided by the GO Nitrate Shots, offer a scientifically supported approach to enhancing athletic performance and physiological efficiency.
