Far fewer understand what happens when they don&#8217;t, not in vague terms like &#8220;you&#8217;ll feel tired,&#8221; but in the specific, measurable ways that dehydration dismantles output before you&#8217;ve noticed any thirst at all.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirst is a lagging indicator. By the time your brain registers it, your body has already been operating in a compromised state. Fluid losses equivalent to around 2% of body mass, roughly 1.4kg for a 70kg athlete, are consistently associated with meaningful drops in aerobic capacity, reaction time, and muscular endurance. That&#8217;s not a catastrophic level of dehydration. You don&#8217;t feel dehydrated, you just feel like you&#8217;re having a bad day. Athletes routinely attribute compromised endurance sessions to sleep, stress, or accumulated fatigue when the actual variable is fluid status going into the session.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strength Work Masks the Problem Until It Doesn&#8217;t<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strength and power work is more resilient, up to a point. Short, explosive efforts can hold up reasonably well under mild dehydration, which leads some athletes to assume they&#8217;re unaffected. But as sessions extend, or as rest periods accumulate heat, the picture changes. Neuromuscular coordination begins to slip. Decision-making in team sport contexts, reading a defensive line, timing a press, choosing when to release a pass, degrades in ways that don&#8217;t show up on a GPS unit but absolutely show up in outcomes.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The danger here is false confidence. Because early sets feel fine, athletes conclude hydration isn&#8217;t a limiting factor. By the time the drop-off is obvious, the session has already been compromised for longer than they realise.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drinking Water Alone Doesn&#8217;t Solve the Equation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fluid loss and electrolyte loss are not the same problem, though they happen simultaneously. Sweat contains sodium, and sodium is the primary electrolyte governing fluid balance in the body. When sodium levels fall, the signal to retain fluid weakens. You can drink water and still fail to rehydrate effectively if the sodium isn&#8217;t there to support absorption and retention.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a critical distinction that generic hydration advice consistently skips. Volume of intake is only half the equation. The athlete who finishes a session with salt residue on their kit, who cramps despite drinking, who feels flat even when carbohydrate intake has been managed, these are often signs of sodium loss that generic formulations aren&#8217;t matching.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matching electrolyte intake to actual sweat composition isn&#8217;t a marginal gain. Heat and humidity increase sweat rate substantially. A hydration strategy that works through a British winter may leave the same athlete significantly under-fuelled during a summer training camp or a competition in warmer climates.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performance numbers don&#8217;t lie, but they don&#8217;t always explain themselves either. A bad interval session, a sluggish second half, a strength session that stalls, dehydration is rarely the first thing athletes examine.
