At the upper end, one large athlete training hard in the heat has been documented losing around 2,500 mL per hour. More heat means more sweat, which means more total water and more total sodium leaving the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters is sodium relative to how much water you drink, not the total amount of sodium you take in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sodium holds water in the body and helps defend your blood sodium level. <strong>It matters most when you replace the bulk of a large sweat loss over a long, hot effort.<\/strong> No large study has shown a performance benefit from sodium alone, separate from drinking enough fluid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Replace large sweat losses mostly with plain water, and your blood sodium can drift below the normal range. That drop is hyponatremia, and it comes from over-drinking, not from too little salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threshold is more specific than most athletes expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take an athlete with <strong>saltier-than-average sweat<\/strong>. Blood sodium starts to fall once they replace <strong>roughly 70% or more<\/strong> of their fluid losses with plain water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking more than you lose is what pushes blood sodium too low.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More fluid is not automatically safer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much sodium is in sweat varies widely from one athlete to the next, and it also shifts as you adapt to the heat. The athlete above is just one worked example, and some lose meaningfully more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why a single salt prescription does not fit everyone. Add electrolytes when these stack up: heat, heavy or salty sweat, high fluid turnover, and long duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common cues vary by athlete, but include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White salt marks or streaks on your kit and skin, or the kit soaked through by the end, indicate heavy or salty sweat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking a lot and still feeling thirsty, bottle after bottle, which is high fluid turnover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It plays out in a few clear cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hot conditions, heavy sweating, and a lot of plain water.<\/strong> This is the key case. When you replace large sweat losses with water alone, what you put in that water starts to matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long, hot efforts across sports.<\/strong> Multi-hour bike rides, long hikes, and time on foot in the heat. The trigger is duration plus heat, in any sport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heavy or salty sweaters for long efforts.<\/strong> If you lose a lot of sodium and you drink a lot of fluid, deliberately replacing some sodium is a sensible, low-risk choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Longer events in the heat.<\/strong> Endurance races, triathlons, multisport days, and long summer training blocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cool, short, or easy sessions usually do not need added electrolytes. Plain water is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within a few hours, sodium is more about taste and comfort than performance. The real trigger is long and hot enough that you replace most of your sweat losses, with an ultra-distance race as the clear case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That boundary shifts with the athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Match Hydration to the Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategy adjusts to you, and three levers do most of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Match your drinking to your losses, not to a fixed rule.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cool, short, or easy sessions: drinking to thirst is usually enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efforts over about 90 minutes, or any long, hot, sweaty one: thirst can lag your real losses. Plan to replace a good share of what you sweat out, sized to your own sweat rate. How much you sweat and how salty your sweat is vary a lot between people, so there is no single right dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the heat, match both the fluid and what is in it to the conditions and the athlete.
