But as the volume and intensity increased, the gaps started to show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFuelling&nbsp;has&nbsp;probably been&nbsp;one of the biggest changes for me. I&nbsp;definitely underestimated&nbsp;how much I&nbsp;actually needed, especially around harder sessions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That shift tends to happen when performance stalls \u2014 not because of fitness, but because the body simply&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;have enough energy to support the work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs training load increased, I&nbsp;realised&nbsp;that under-fuelling&nbsp;was affecting both performance and recovery. Now I see&nbsp;fuelling&nbsp;as part of training, not separate from it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, that means going into sessions with intent; not just in how you train, but in how you fuel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fuel For the Session You&#8217;re About to Do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical training week for Charlie includes a mix of running, strength, and HYROX-specific work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most physically demanding sessions are usually the threshold sessions; they require a lot of discipline and focus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These sessions are also where&nbsp;fuelling&nbsp;becomes most visible. Go in under-fuelled, and the drop-off in quality is immediate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before these sessions, she focuses on simple, carbohydrate-based options that are easy to digest. Something like a bagel with honey and a banana, a couple of hours before, will often form the base. When time is tighter or&nbsp;appetite&nbsp;is low, topping up closer to the session becomes more important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d rather get something in than nothing at all,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where quick, accessible options can make a difference. Everything is built on&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;already been tested in training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe day before, the main focus is keeping things simple: plenty of carbs, good hydration, and nothing too heavy or unfamiliar.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Charlie often races later in the day,&nbsp;she\u2019s&nbsp;able to build her intake gradually, starting with a carbohydrate-focused breakfast, followed by structured meals leading into the race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer to the start, intake becomes more about topping up. The key is that it&#8217;s something the body is used to&nbsp;handling&nbsp;under intensity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the race itself, especially in doubles, opportunities to fuel are limited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about making sure energy stays high without overcomplicating things.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which makes everything done beforehand even more important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training the Gut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most overlooked aspects of fuelling is tolerance \u2014 not just what you take in, but what your body can&nbsp;actually handle&nbsp;at intensity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRace day isn\u2019t the time to test anything new,\u201d Charlie says. \u201cI\u2019ve worked on practising fuelling during harder&nbsp;sessions&nbsp;so my body gets used to taking on carbs under intensity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where consistency matters. Using the same types of fuel in training as you would on race day allows the body to adapt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with smaller amounts and gradually increasing intake across sessions helps build tolerance. Regular meals, adequate carbohydrate intake, sufficient protein, and hydration all support the ability to train the next day again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecovery doesn\u2019t need to be complicated,\u201d she says. \u201cBut consistency matters. Sleep is&nbsp;probably the&nbsp;biggest non-negotiable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting it Wrong Before Getting It Right<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charlie is clear on what held her back earlier in her progression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest mistake was definitely under-fuelling and thinking lighter meant better performance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s&nbsp;a mindset that still shows up across many athletes \u2014 but one that rarely supports long-term performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t fully understand how much energy training at this level actually requires.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, her approach has shifted completely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI cannot get through a session without consuming calories.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That consistency is what allows her to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;quality across the week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small Margins Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Elite 15 level,&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;no single breakthrough moment. Progress comes from stacking small improvements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConsistency across everything has made the biggest difference. Training hard, recovering well, fuelling properly, and being patient with progress.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes the mental&nbsp;side&nbsp;too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLearning not to panic after a bad session or race has been huge.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuelling plays into that more than many&nbsp;realise. When intake is consistent, energy is stable, and recovery is&nbsp;supported,&nbsp;it removes one of the biggest variables in performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Doubles Dynamic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Racing doubles bring a slightly different demand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe intensity can be even higher in shorter bursts,\u201d Charlie explains, \u201cso pacing becomes really important.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While fuelling strategies&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;change dramatically, the need to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;energy and stay sharp remains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou still need to stay strong right to the end.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which again reinforces the importance of everything leading into the race \u2014 because once it starts, there\u2019s limited opportunity to adjust.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the World Championships approaching, the focus is clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo perform at the&nbsp;level&nbsp;I know we\u2019re capable of and execute a race we\u2019re proud of.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And beyond that, the approach&nbsp;remains&nbsp;the same; continue refining, continue improving, and continue building on the process that got her there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about seeing how far I can take it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charlie\u2019s progression to Elite 15 highlights a shift many athletes eventually need to make.
