They come from doing the right things in the wrong order.<br>Every training cycle, I see the same patterns show up\u2014early fatigue, long runs falling apart, and race day feeling harder than expected.<br>Here are the most common mistakes behind it, and what to do instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left !important; font-size: 32px !important;\">\n    <strong>Mistake #1: Doing too much, too soon<\/strong>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You feel good early in the plan. Mileage climbs quickly. Long runs stretch earlier than scheduled. Recovery weeks get skipped because nothing hurts <em>yet<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, it feels productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then easy runs stop feeling easy. Small aches linger longer than they should. Fatigue sticks around even after rest days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where training starts to unravel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your aerobic system adapts gradually. Tendons, bones, and connective tissue adapt even more slowly. When training load jumps too fast, fitness can\u2019t keep up with fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t build durability. It just makes every week harder than it needs to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fix isn\u2019t backing off completely. It\u2019s building <strong>progressively enough for adaptations to stack<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That might look like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weekly mileage increasing in small, planned steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long runs grow only after shorter runs feel stable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scheduled lighter weeks instead of pushing straight through<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:41px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistake #2: All Your Runs Look the Same<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is harder to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re running most days. You\u2019re not racing workouts. Nothing feels extreme. Every run ends up at the same pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When all your runs feel the same, none of them do their job particularly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy runs aren\u2019t easy enough to support recovery. Hard sessions aren\u2019t hard enough to create a meaningful training signal. You accumulate fatigue without clear adaptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy days create space to absorb training. Hard days give your body a reason to change. When those lines blur, progress slows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution isn\u2019t more intensity. Others force it too early and too often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both approaches miss the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marathon pace isn\u2019t just a speed. It\u2019s a specific metabolic and muscular demand that your body has to learn how to sustain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you never practice it, race day becomes a guessing game. If you overuse it, fatigue accumulates before your body is ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timing matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As race day approaches, training should become more specific. That\u2019s when marathon pace work earns its place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all season. Not every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Controlled exposures teach your body what \u201csustainable\u201d actually feels like without overwhelming the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That might look like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Marathon pace blocks inside runs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Controlled marathon pace segments rather than workouts built entirely around it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gradually increasing duration as fitness stabilises<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal isn&#8217;t to prove fitness. It&#8217;s to prepare your body for the demands you&#8217;ll face late in the race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistake #4: Underfueling Long Runs (and Never Practicing Race Fueling)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This mistake usually shows up later in the build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long runs start well. Then energy drops sharply after 90 minutes. Pace fades. Form slips. The run turns into survival mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most runners assume this means they\u2019re not fit enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can also be a fueling issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once runs extend beyond 90\u2013120 minutes, carbohydrate availability can become a limiting factor for many new marathoners. Without fuel coming in, training quality drops, and fatigue rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as important, race day fueling isn\u2019t something you want to experiment with for the first time on race morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fueling is part of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Practising carbohydrate intake during long runs supports the session itself and helps your gut adapt over time. That reduces the risk of GI issues when it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where familiar options runners already use can help\u2014higher-carb gels for longer efforts, or smaller, more frequent doses while tolerance builds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That might look like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taking in carbs during long runs, not just races<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practising timing and formats well before race day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treating fueling as a skill you train, not a last-minute detail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering what this looks like in practice, many runners use lower-dose options like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-go-isotonic-energy-gel-pack\">GO Isotonic Energy Gels<\/a> earlier in the build, then transition to higher-carb options like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/beta-fuel-gel-pack\">BETA Fuel<\/a> as long runs get longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The product matters less than practising timing, tolerance, and consistency well before race day.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If long runs consistently fall apart late, fitness isn\u2019t always the missing piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A simple checklist to keep training on track<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to avoid most marathon training mistakes, focus here: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Build gradually, <\/strong>even when motivation is high<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Separate easy and hard days<\/strong> so each can do its job<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Earn marathon pace work<\/strong> as race day approaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel long runs like race rehearsals<\/strong>, not tests of willpower<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Marathon training doesn\u2019t need to be complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most problems come from stacking too much stress, too quickly, without enough structure or preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get the order right, and training gets simpler.
