Adding to this, Ganna became the first cyclist to beat Chris Broadman\u2019s time which has been held as a benchmark since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>As with all the INEOS Grenadiers team efforts, Science in Sport played an integral role in achieving the World Record, in collaboration with the Team\u2019s other partners to push the boundaries of science to improve performance.<\/p>\n<p>In this article we share a unique insight into developing Ganna\u2019s UCI Hour Record Fuelling Plan, and how he fuelled his world record-breaking achievement with SiS.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><strong>The Preparation\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ability to fuel and recover effectively is a key factor to Ganna\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the event, Science in Sport\u2019s Performance Solutions Nutritionist, Dr Marc Fell, worked with INEOS Grenadiers\u2019 Aitor Viribay and the wider performance team to develop an intake program to support Ganna\u2019s\u00a0final preparation.<\/p>\n<p>This included\u00a0focussed periodisation of SiS Nitrates,<span style=\"color: #000000\"> Beta Alan<span style=\"color: #000000\">ine<\/span>, <a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-hydro-tablets-pack\">Hydro<\/a>, <a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/shop-sis\/go-range\/beta-fuel\/beta-fuel-gel-pack\">Beta Fuel<\/a> <\/span>and some bespoke products developed exclusively for the team by SiS Performance Solutions for the record attempt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17086 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/Ganna-Finish-Shots-14-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ganna holding World Record Sign\" width=\"627\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/Ganna-Finish-Shots-14-2-2.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/Ganna-Finish-Shots-14-2-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><strong>Friday 7<sup>th<\/sup> October <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before the attempt, the goal is to stay hydrated with proper fluid and electrolyte balance and to load glycogen with high carbohydrate meals.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Carbohydrate loading:<\/strong>\u00a0Consuming high g\/kg of carbohydrate, training sessions are fuelled with carbohydrate drinks a<span style=\"color: #000000\">nd <a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-go-energy-bake-12-pack\">SiS Go Energy Bakes<\/a> <\/span>to support glycogen loading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recovery<\/strong>:\u00a0Supported with <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-rapid-recovery-powder\">SiS REGO Rapid Recovery<\/a><\/span>, carbohydrate and protein are of importance here, with additional fructose to optimise liver glycogen loading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydration:<\/strong>\u202f The hydration strategy is based on using different drinks throughout the day, such as teas, water, sparkling water and supplementing electrolytes with <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-hydro-tablets-pack\">SiS HYDRO<\/a><\/span> and INEOS Grenadiers bespoke \u2018SiS Hydro Juice\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><strong>Saturday 8<sup>th<\/sup> October <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The morning before the attempt, the goal is to optimise glycogen loading with a final top up.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Carbohydrate loading:<\/strong> A breakfast consisting of high g\/kg for carbohydrate, 0.35 g\/kg protein and limited fats and fibre. Filippo supports the morning spin ride with some carbohydrates, using bespoke \u2018SiS Grenadier\u2019 drinks and <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-go-energy-bake-12-pack\">SiS GO Energy Bakes<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protein intake:<\/strong> Protein intake is achieved with an <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/protein20-bar-12-pack\">SiS Protein20 Bar<\/a><\/span> in the mid-morning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydration:<\/strong> Similar to the previous day, Filippo keeps hydrating with water, \u2018SiS Hydro Juice\u2019 and <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sis-hydro-tablets-pack\">SiS HYDRO tablets<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17087 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/CAuldPhoto-Ineos-Ganna-0409-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ganna taking spoon of liquid\" width=\"627\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/CAuldPhoto-Ineos-Ganna-0409-1-2.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/CAuldPhoto-Ineos-Ganna-0409-1-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before the attempt, there is a final meal to optimise liver glycogen and blood sugar to be ready for the hour, followed by the warmup fuelling and cooling strategy.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Last meal:<\/strong> Not too different from breakfast but with slightly lower carbohydrate quantities<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooling:<\/strong> Filippo consumes a cold \u2018SiS Grenadier 40\u2019 drink, which is similar to<span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/shop-sis\/go-range\/beta-fuel\/beta-fuel-80\"> SiS Beta Fuel<\/a><\/span>, alongside other cooling strategies.
