There\u2019s nothing quite like feeling strong in a world that often would prefer you to be weak. I\u2019ve stopped setting limits on myself; there is power in removing your own mental barriers and wondering what you\u2019re\u00a0<em>actually<\/em>\u00a0capable of.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>How do you overcome adversity as a woman?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I have found it hard to feel confident enough to walk into the weights section of a gym for as long as I can remember, but I got a great PT and learned to trust that I deserve to be in that space. Sometimes just having some back-up and someone to be your cheerleader is all you need!<\/p>\n<p>With running, the main barrier is feeling safe. Like many women I make sure someone has my location tracked when I\u2019m out, I stick to well-lit areas at night, I do all the \u201csensible\u201d things. But above all, I get out there anyway and don\u2019t let my gender determine my right and freedom to move.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What changes would you like to see for women?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I\u2019d like to see all women made to feel unconditionally welcome in fitness spaces, and represented in all sports. Not just women who look a certain way or compete at a certain level; I want all women to be able to reclaim their place in sport.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Do you have any advice for women who want to get into sports?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Take up space, you belong here! However small you have to start, just make sure that you do. When you start to feel strong and capable and realise your power, there is nothing that can stop you. If you\u2019re struggling, find a community or another individual who you identify with and help each other &#8211; there is such power in our collective encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16512 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/03\/UK_Wk10_Email_Tuesday_600_x_250_Asset_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/03\/UK_Wk10_Email_Tuesday_600_x_250_Asset_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.scienceinsport.com\/sports-nutrition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/03\/UK_Wk10_Email_Tuesday_600_x_250_Asset_2-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Jessie Tappin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jessietappin\/\">@jessietappin<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What makes you feel empowered as a woman in sport?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Standing on the start line representing my country and acting as a role model for all females who inspire greatness in life, has to be the best feeling ever!<\/p>\n<h5><strong>How do you overcome adversity as a woman?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It was tough as a teenage girl wanting to be an athlete throughout my school years. My body developed differently to some of the other girls at the school and I wasn\u2019t seen at the time as \u201cattractive\u201d or \u201cfeminine\u201d. As a result, I was bullied about my shape and size by both males and females.\u00a0When I started thriving in sport, people started to look up to me, idolising me. I am very lucky to have some amazing friends that support me, some within my sport and some not.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>How do you overcome adversity as a woman?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s finding the correct way to educate others when faced with adversity. Ask them what they mean or explain how that makes you feel in a given situation.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What changes would you like to see for women?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Making women feel more comfortable in their own skin. We all come in different shapes and sizes and I believe that should be celebrated.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Do you have any advice for women who want to get into sports?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Pick something you are likely to enjoy, if you can find a local club\/team depending on the sport. Some sports often lead themselves as male dominated, but the only way this can change is the more we get involved. It\u2019s often empowering to be \u2018one of a few\u2019 but ultimately, I just want to be surrounded by more like minded females wanting to get stuck in and involved.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What changes would you like to see within sport?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I think quite a lot of fitness\/sport activities can come across as quite daunting. Often coming across like a clique, but all you need is a friendly face and a connection. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s about making it more inclusive because the opportunities are there, but it\u2019s what we are being held back by.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Do you have any advice for women who want to get into sport?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Honestly, just do it. Starting somewhere is all you need. If you don\u2019t have the kit or knowledge, that\u2019s fine, but make a start somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>When I first started cycling, I had no idea what I was doing. I ordered the cheapest, basics online and went from there. You find that kit you \u2019need\u2019 from seeing others and you gradually build it up along with your knowledge of your chosen sport. If you\u2019re an \u2018all the gear, no idea\u2019, that\u2019s also fine.
