What is iron?
Iron is an essential mineral that we must obtain through the diet, as our body cannot naturally produce this.
What role does iron play in the body?
Iron supports normal immune function, cardiovascular health, red blood cell production, oxygen and carbon dioxide transport in the blood and a reduction in tiredness and fatigue.
Where is iron found in the diet?
Iron is found in a wide range of foods, including meat (heme) and plant (non-heme) sources. However, plant sources of iron have lower bioavailability than meat.
Who is this for?
Active populations and specifically those involved with endurance type training are at a higher risk of low iron, due to the increased losses and quicker red blood cell breakdown associated with exercise.
How should this be supplemented?
Take one tablet per day, with food.
Can I take too much iron?
Yes, there is no benefit to excess iron consumption. In addition, too much dietary iron could lead to iron poisoning. Supplementation should only be undertaken by those with identified deficiencies or working alongside professionals.
