James is the Director of Performance Solutions at Science in Sport responsible for research and innovation as well as strategic delivery of service provision to our elite partners. James is also a Professor of Exercise Metabolism at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). To date, he has authored over 170 research publications in the fields of sports nutrition, physiology and metabolism as well as numerous books / book chapters on these topics. In addition to research, James also works in elite professional sport in both sports physiology and nutrition support roles. From 2010-2015, he was the performance nutritionist to Liverpool FC and also specializes in providing nutritional and conditioning support to a range of professional boxers, MMA athletes and jockeys. James was also the Head of Nutrition and Physical Performance Lead for Team Sky between 2015 and 2019 having led the nutrition strategy for 5 successive Tour de France victories. He also sits on the Technical Steering Panel for the English Institute of Sport and is a High Performance Mentor for the FA Premier League. James is also a Registered Sports and Exercise Nutrition Practitioner with the British Dietetic Association’s UK Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) .
Carl is a research scientist for Performance Solutions and a post-doctoral research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Carl completed his PhD in applied sport physiology and nutrition with a mixed method approach undertaking qualitative, quantitative, laboratory and field based studies examining the effects of making weight strategies on energy availability and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) among combat athletes. Additionally, Carl is an accredited strength & conditioning coach with the UKSCA, qualified sports therapist and completed a master of research (MRes) in sport physiology also at LJMU. Carl has published over 10 research articles in the fields of applied sports nutrition, physiology and strength & conditioning as well as authoring a book chapter on body composition. Alongside his academic roles, Carl consults with a number of professional and Olympic combat sports athletes inclusive of those in the UFC, Bellator, Cage Warriors mixed martial arts promotions, boxing and taekwondo.
Dana is the US Performance Nutrition Lead for Science in Sport. From research to practice to industry, Dana’s wealth of experience has provided her the honour of supporting some of the World’s top athletes. As a registered dietitian and graduate of the renowned IOC diploma in Sport Nutrition Dana has become one of the few to earn the trifecta of performance nutrition by also earning her Registered Dietitian designation at University of British Columbia, doctorate from the University of Tasmania and Post-doctoral research at UC Davis in California. From World Tour cycling to the NBA, Dana continues to strive towards pushing the envelope of evidence-influenced performance nutrition as well as mentorship in the field.
Mark is a post-doctoral researcher responsible for research and innovation within the Performance Solutions team. Having completed his PhD within this area, Mark’s specific research interests focus on the impact of nutrition on both endurance performance and the molecular and cellular responses that underpin training adaptation. Alongside research, Mark is also a Registered Sports and Exercise Nutrition Practitioner with the British Dietetic Association’s UK Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and currently serves to provide nutrition support within professional football.
Jen is a member of the Science in Sport “Win in Science” team and a post-doctoral research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Jen’s current research is evaluating the optimal fuelling strategies for female athletes. Jen completed her PhD in exercise metabolism and nutrition, focussed on both understanding insulin signalling at the cellular level and manipulating fuel utilisation during exercise via pharmacological treatment and nutritional status. Jen is also a registered graduate Sport and Exercise Nutrition practitioner with the British Dietetic Association’s UK Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).
