James is the Director of Performance Solutions at Science in Sport responsible for research and innovation as well as strategic delivery of service provision to our elite partners. James is also a Professor of Exercise Metabolism at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). To date, he has authored over 150 research publications in the fields of sports nutrition, physiology and metabolism as well as numerous books / book chapters on these topics. In addition to research, James also works in elite professional sport in both sports physiology and nutrition support roles. From 2010-2015, he was the performance nutritionist to Liverpool FC and also specializes in providing nutritional and conditioning support to a range of professional boxers, MMA athletes and jockeys. James was also the Head of Nutrition and Physical Performance Lead for Team Sky between 2015 and 2019 having led the nutrition strategy for the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Tour de France victories. He also sits on the Technical Steering Panel for the English Institute of Sport. **
James is an Elite Performance Nutritionist on the Performance Solutions Team working with Team INEOS. He is responsible for delivering nutrition support to the riders on Team INEOS in both training and racing. Before joining the team, James worked as a Performance Nutritionist in the English Institute of Sport with British Cycling, British Para Swimming, Great Britain Equestrian, in addition to a number of catering and performance chef projects. James also has experience of working with UCI Pro Road Cycling, UCI Cross Country and Downhill Mountain Bike as well as professional boxing. Before moving into sport, James worked as a clinical Dietitian for over 10 years in a range of medical and health settings and has a specialist interest in type 1 diabetes and gastrointestinal conditions.
Mark is a post-doctoral researcher responsible for research and innovation within the Performance Solutions team. Having completed his PhD within this area, Mark’s specific research interests focus on the impact of nutrition on both endurance performance and the molecular and cellular responses that underpin training adaptation. Alongside research, Mark is also a Registered Sports and Exercise Nutrition Practitioner with the British Dietetic Association’s UK Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and currently serves to provide nutrition support within professional football.
Ainhoa is the Elite Performance Nutritionist responsible for service provision to our elite partners including Team INEOS. Ainhoa completed her BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics in Spain and her great interest in sport nutrition moved her to the UK where she completed her MSc Sport Nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University, when she worked with the Liverpool Ladies FC. Ainhoa spent several years in the UK including her experience at the High Performance Centre in the University of Birmingham, Leeds Beckett University for students under the TASS scheme, Doncaster Rovers Belles FC and also as a clinical registered dietitian for Diabetes UK and the NHS in Leeds. In 2016 she moved back to Spain as Lead Sport Nutritionist for Deportivo Alavés FC in La Liga when she was part of the King’s Cup Final against Barcelona FC. Within that role she also managed the Performance Nutrition department for Baskonia Basketball Club competing in ACB and Euroleague. Ainhoa is a passionate performance nutritionist with an extensive experience of more than 10 years in different sports and countries, where her aim has always been to create a useful link between science and education to provide both team-wide and individual-specific nutritional strategies to respond to the core determinants of performance.
Carl is a research scientist for Performance Solutions and a post-doctoral research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Carl completed his PhD in applied sport physiology and nutrition with a mixed method approach undertaking qualitative, quantitative, laboratory and field based studies examining the effects of making weight strategies on energy availability and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) among combat athletes. Additionally, Carl is an accredited strength & conditioning coach with the UKSCA, qualified sports therapist and completed a master of research (MRes) in sport physiology also at LJMU. Carl has published over 10 research articles in the fields of applied sports nutrition, physiology and strength & conditioning as well as authoring a book chapter on body composition. Alongside his academic roles, Carl consults with a number of professional and Olympic combat sports athletes inclusive of those in the UFC, Bellator, Cage Warriors mixed martial arts promotions, boxing and taekwondo.
