SiS Rider wins Giro d'Italia.Alberto Contador of the SiS sponsored Astana Team backs up his Tour de France win of 2007 with a historic win in the Giro d'Italia.
It's been 12 years since anybody else other than an Italian has won the "Tour of Italy", and Contador added this title to his 2007 Tour de France victory. Contador has effectively taken 2 of the last 3 "Grand Tours". It was not easy picking's for Contador though as SiS sponsored Saunier Duval rider Ricardo Ricco pushed him all the way. Team Astana use a fairly comprehensive selection of SiS products. Mostly GO>>> electrolyte when they're out riding, supplemented with GO-Gels and Smart 1's, but they also use a reasonable amount of PSP22. After rides they use REGO Recovery and Nocte in the evening, which makes a massive difference in stage races like the Giro.
Following discussions with Saunier Duval general manager Mauro Gianetti at EuroBike in September, Science in Sport have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the Saunier Duval team in 2008.
Peter Slater and Tim Lawson have just returned from the first team get together in Noja, northern Spain were as well as presenting to the riders, masseurs and medical staff they also had time to fit in a training ride with the team.
Peter Slater says “Mauro approached me at EuroBike to express how keen he and the riders were to ensure that Science in Sport continued to support the team in 2008. He also said the Science in Sport range of energy and recovery products had been accepted and used by the whole team with no problems, just lots of praise”.
Slater goes on to say “It was important for us to visit the team at this training camp to ensure the riders, masseurs and medial staff are fully educated and up to speed reagrding the correct use of all our products in order to maximise the benefit. It was very encouraging for us when riders such as Piepoli, Ricco, Cobo and Belohvosciks were so pleased to see us at the camp which to them confirmed Science in Sport were to continue as a sponsor. Piepoli was like a ‘kid in a sweet shop’ when he realised he would still have his favoured GO-Gels to fuel him to the top of some very big mountains. Ricco and Belohvosciks had great praise for GO-Gels, Smart-1 Gels and Rego, whilst Cobo hinted that his recovery and sleep had significantly improved this year since he started using Nocte. All in all we had a few very good days with the team which gave us the chance to get to know the riders better and to see how much they really appreciate the support we are giving them. Cycling and being competitive at the highest level is extremely demanding and draining on your energy system, these guys take their sports nutrition very seriously and know what works on and off the bike – SiS is their choice”.
Team SiS rider Wendy Houvenaghel followed up victory at the British Time Trial Championships by setting a new National record for 10 miles of 19:50 at Andover. It was a great team performance for SiS as the team of Lesley-Anne Wakeling, Houvenaghel, and Helen Carter (as pictured) set a new record of 1:03:25.
Long-time SiS devote and Saunier Duval Pro rider David Millar took the honours in the Mens British Time Trial Championship by just over one and a half minutes. This represents a unique double for Millar as he now holds both the national time trial champion's jersey and the national road race champion's jersey.
Team CSC take on the tourTeam CSC stormed to victory in the central London based Prologue of the Tour de France prologue with World time trial champion Fabian Cancellara taking the honours in front of massive crowds. Cancellara was the only man inside 9 minutes, and edged out Britains Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) into 4th and pushed David Millar (Saunier Duval) just outside the top ten. All these riders where using Science in Sport products in the build up to the race and went well. Millar went on to a have a great ride in the London to Cantebury stage the next day and Wiggins has had a storming ride laer on in the race when he was caught just befre the finish following a lone 100km break from the field, clearly an indication that he is a contender for the future in this only his second Tour.

Team CSC take control on the Paris-Roubaix with Smart 1Pre-season testing of Smart 1 Energizer Gels was so succesful with team CSC that the riders used up all their pre-production supplies of Smart 1 sooner than they expected.
The riders were having great results in the early season races but they where using so many that by the time the Paris Roubaix came along they’d tun out.
Frantic calls on Easter Sunday made sure arrangements were made to get urgent supplies out in time for the teams attack on the Paris-Roubaix. The Gels arrived just in time and the team had a great race with Stuart O’Grady taking top honours and securing CSC’s place as the number one team.

On Saturday 24th February at the English Institute of Sport (EiS) Manchester, the UK’s leading sports nutrition company Science in Sport launched their new elite cycling team for 2007. Science in Sport have joined forces with Trek UK, the worlds foremost bike company, to form a unique cycling team - Team Science in Sport Trek for more info - visit
Science in Sport.com track riders had some outstanding performances at the Manchester round of the UCI World Cup.
There is no doubt that the rider of the weekend title goes to Victoria Pendleton who claimed Gold in all three events that she competed in - the Sprint, 500m TT and the Keirin. Victoria set a new British record of 34.866 in the 500m TT and was only just outside the World record. Wendy Houvenaghel was in awesome pusuiting form as she lowered Yvonne McGregors National record that has stood for 10 years to 3:33.778 in claiming the gold medal and World Cup series title. Another Science in Sport rider Rebecca Romero riding in GB colours lowered her PB to 3:36.684 in claiming the silver medal in what was only her third ever competitive individual pursuit.
It was a weekend of bad luck all round for the guys though with Jamie Staff crashing out heavily on the final bend in the Keirin final when he looked certain to claim a podium place. Even worse was to come in the Team Sprint when the Scienceinsport.com trio of Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Matthew Crampton were controversially disqualified for two false starts in what could have been an eagerly awaited battle against the GB Team.
Science in Sport sponsored Olympic Champion Bradley Wiggins made a very impressive return to track racing as he dominated the individual pursuit to take the gold medal in an outstanding time of 4:17.864. Bradley then went onto to lead the GB team pursuit squad to an impressive sub 4 minute time in qualifying and then backed this up with a 4 minute ride in the final. The team were then denied the chance to set a new British record in the final when they caught the Russian team and lost valuable time going round them.

Over the years we have had strong links with many individual riders in the Pro Tour Peloton, including some who have worn the coveted yellow jersey. Working closely with Team CSC, the number one ranked cycling team in the World, will provide us with valuable feedback to further develop our leading range of energy, recovery and adaptation products, and will also give us the perfect platform to launch the SiS brand to the rest of the world. This collaboration with Team CSC also presents Science in Sport with the opportunity to work closely with the riders and staff to further improve and develop our existing range of products, as well as aiding the riders in continuing to compete and be successful at the highest level", says Peter Slater from Science in Sport
“For us, working together with Science in Sport means that will be using the most scientifically advanced products on the market for races, recovery and training. We look forward to be going into competition with these products, but we also see a unique opportunity to share the feedback we give to SIS so other athletes on all levels can benefit. Our collaboration with SIS is a win-win situation and we feel convinced that this will help us maintain our position as not only best team in the world, but also the most innovative”, says Bjarne Riis.View cycling.tv footage of the recent csc training camp here:
Over a wet and windy weekend of racing in Southampton at the National Cyclo Cross Championships the Science in Sport – Trek elite team walked away with 3 individual titles and the senior men’s team title to boot.
This was the race that people had come to watch, a high class field which included former champion and T-Mobile professional Roger
Hammond, Commonwealth Games MTB Champion Liam Killeen and Rob Jebb who was favoured because of his running ability which was going to be crucial in the thick mud. However, Phil Dixon of the Science in Sport – Trek team took complete control on the first lap and continued to build an unassailable lead leaving the rest of the field to battle it out for the minor placings. At the end of a hard race in difficult conditions Dixon crossed the line 1:29 ahead of his nearest rival Nick Craig with Rob Jebb taking the bronze medal.
Afterwards Phil Dixon commented “I am really pleased with the result, my first senior title. I had a race plan which I stuck to, it was muddy but you just get on with it, it's the same for everybody. I enjoy the sport and just turned up today and got on with it. I would also like to thank Science in Sport and Trek for the support I have received”.
The under 23 Championship once again saw the two Ian’s – Bibby and Field battling it out for the title. A fine return to form by Ian Bibby saw him take the title this time finishing 7th overall in the men’s race with Ian Field a creditable 10th.
With three team members in the top 10 the Science in Sport – Trek team walked away with the Team Title.
Defending Champion Roy Hunt had a ding dong battle right up to the last lap with Martin Booth when a slip in the mud from Booth gave Hunt the opportunity to open up a gap and once again claim victory. "This has been my toughest win, I’m glad it was a real battle and a good race, anyone's race up to a lap to go. To be honest, until a week ago I didn't think I would be riding here, my form hasn't been the same since a car pulled out in front of me and I was knocked unconscious. I wasn't going to come all this way just to ride round and not have a battle, I enjoy the mud so I didn't see the conditions as a disadvantage" said Roy Hunt.
Science in Sport – Trek Team Manager Phil Bibby said: “This is a great start to 2007 for the team, three titles in one weekend. I’m really pleased for Phil, Ian and Roy who have worked really hard towards this over the winter months. Overall we couldn’t have asked for anything more with Ian Field helping us to the team title”.
